Deluxe Room - De Carolis
Deluxe Room - De Carolis
The De Carolis Room is a spacious superior room with a breathtaking view of the lush surrounding valley; it features a comfortable double bed, a small kitchenette with a refrigerator, and a bathroom equipped with every amenity.
As for the history of the De Carolis family, we know that in 1726, Livio De Carolis, with the authorization of Pope Benedict XIII, purchased the fief of Prossedi from the Altieri family.
Born in Pofi in 1680, the son of Giovanni Battista, Livio De Carolis was appointed by the Pope as a Roman patrician and Prince of Prossedi.
A member of a wealthy merchant family, Livio made his fortune by securing the exclusive contract for the grain-milling tax in the provinces of Marittima and Campagna, managing as much as forty thousand scudi a year. Livio De Carolis behaved like a Renaissance sovereign, commissioning numerous works such as the important 18th-century fountain in Frosinone near the sanctuary of Madonna della Neve. In 1727, he commissioned the construction of the monumental fountain at the entrance to the town of Prossedi to mark the visit—or rather, the passing through—of Benedict XIII. A beautiful inscription commemorating the event is placed on this fountain, and on its pediment we can admire the coats of arms of the De Carolis family and the papal family. During his heyday (1714–1728), he commissioned architect Alessandro Specchi to build an important palace in Rome on Via del Corso: Palazzo De Carolis. He spared no expense in the construction of the building, particularly in embellishing the interiors with numerous works of art. The residence was intended to serve as a calling card to secure important public offices that would allow him to recoup his investment; however, this did not happen, and the family fell into ruin. Livio died at the age of 53, and his son Nicola was forced to sell both the Marquisate of Prossedi and the magnificent palace in Rome.
