Family Room - Gabrielli

Family Room - Gabrielli

The small apartment is on two floors; the living area is on the upper floor, very bright, with a view of the valley and a functional kitchenette. Going down a staircase made of iron and wood, you’ll find the sleeping area, which consists of a comfortable double bed and an adjacent area with a sleeper sofa and a bathroom equipped with every amenity.

The Gabrielli family, descended from Roman patricians, purchased the fief of Prossedi in 1758 from Girolamo Altieri for 36,000 scudi. The family lived and worked in Rome, where they were involved in commerce. Among their properties was the luxurious residence at Monte Giordano. Among the illustrious members of the family, Angelo V is particularly noteworthy; in 1762, after purchasing the marquisate of Roccasecca and the fief of Pisterzo, obtained permission to unite the estates into a single principality. Angelo took up residence in Prossedi and began major construction projects: the restoration of the castle, the construction of water mills along the Amaseno River, and olive presses for processing olives.                                  His son, Pietro III, was the second Prince of Prossedi; he distinguished himself for his culture and intelligence. He carried out numerous projects in Prossedi: in addition to completing the restoration of the castle and the Church of Sant’Agata, he commissioned the construction of the Church of Strammetta and the Palace of Justice.                                                               His son, Mario IV, inherited the title of Prince of Prossedi and, on December 28, 1815, married Carlotta Bonaparte, daughter of Luciano, Prince of Canino, brother of Emperor Napoleon. The young woman had turned down numerous marriage proposals from prominent figures of the time before meeting Prince Gabrielli. The couple had eight children, and after the death of his brother Mario IV, Placido became the fourth and last Prince of Prossedi. Placido Gabrielli married his cousin Augusta, daughter of Carlo Luciano and Zenaide, daughter of King Joseph of Spain. Placido and Augusta were active in Roman political, social, and high-society life and were well-liked and highly regarded. Placido was a respected Italian banker and politician. Princess Augusta is remembered for her numerous charitable works and, above all, for her concern for the poor, children, and women. The princess was responsible for establishing the first kindergarten in 1885, with the arrival of the Sisters of Charity, to ensure that children did not spend all day wandering the streets of the town but could attend a kindergarten where they would receive an education and a decent meal.          She established a workshop where young women could learn the art of embroidery; her mission was to educate women above all, believing that through their education, future generations could be educated and improved. Princess Augusta died on March 29, 1900, and was buried in Prossedi at the Church of Strammetta; photos from private collections document her solemn funeral.                                                                                                                  Placido Gabrielli, the last prince of Prossedi, died in Frascati in 1911 at the age of 79; the marriage produced no heirs, and before his death, specifically in 1907, Placido sold the palace in Prossedi to his nephew, Marquis Alberto Del Gallo di Roccagiovine.

The descendants of the Del Gallo family of Roccagiovine are the current owners of Palazzo Gabrielli.
